Take One for the Team
Our Cacotopia prides itself for being janitor-less. Janitors, though one of the unsung (and frequently berated) heroes, are symbols of disgrace in the society called Present. They represent the ills of capitalism and manifestations of irresponsibility. On my frequent ventures to Present, there’s been a widespread mentality that throwing trash to the proper bins is akin to wrestling a wild boar. They matched their unemployment crisis with this societal need: have someone take care of other people’s trash. It was an ingenuine solution. Hit two birds with one stone. And I concur that they had a brain tumor resulting in a mismatch between reality and perception. And their definition of trash isn’t even consistent at all. Scratch paper? Check. Banana peels? Check. Food? Check. Spilled siomai sauce? Check. Biohazard? Check. With stains, they need to find someone else to remove them. Then we have the critics of the janitors who get paid in dehumanizing the underpaid workers.
Cacotopia has a less appealing solution. Parenting. As it all stems from child rearing, they made it a point to instill discipline though it would be too harsh for the Presentese. If you don’t clean the bathroom you share with other people, they’ll cut your internet connection. For every candy wrapper you forgot-to-keep-in-your-pocket-to-throw-later-when you-find-a-trash-can, they’ll invalidate your Starbucks planner stamp card. In essence, when you can’t be responsible for your own life, let’s just take out the force that makes you want to live.
In the end, Cacotopia is a figment of my imagination. Present will always be where I am. We would always make the world a better place for us to live in with us meaning each of us individually. There are no others who we share our lives with except if you’re Piolo Pascual or Rhian Ramos.
