Lupang Hinirang
Never expected this to win any award, from the pros or from the people’s verdict (marketing), nor didn’t I expect this or any of my submissions getting at least a couple of ‘likes’. But one thing I learned from this experience is that the artwork, in this case, the photograph, should be able to stand on its own without the marketing of the photographer.
It’s interesting that somebody saw its resemblance of the Philippine flag. From a mere ‘Firmament’, this piece’s original title, showcasing the divide of the heavens from the land of the mortals, it grew to something more. Have I thought of this new deeper meaning, I suspect it would have a greater impact in the contest but it doesn’t matter as this art belongs to the world. It’s not me anymore.
In place of the sun is a man, the hope of a bright future ahead for the country. Digging more, it is revealed that the man standing is a future doctor who will stay in the country to serve the underserved.
